I have a terrible weakness for sales tactics, meaning I'm easily persuaded to purchase products. That's why I have bad debts/installments in my credit cards which I curse and swear every month when the bills turn up in my letter box. And yet, I often not able to say, no.
Okay, in the first place, I'm obsessed with my weight/figure/how I look. So before my wedding, I actually signed up with Body Perfect and of course wasted alot of unnecessary money. I've lost count of how much. Just when I finally get rid of them, I couldn't resist buying this voucher from dunno-which-vendor (Groupon or something) for a deal with Bottomslim. Lesson not learned.... You know, one thing about buying these vouchers; when you turned up there, those people will go all their way out to persuade you to buy their packages and sometimes they can get pretty scary because they literally lock you in a room and then the sales people will bombard you. Okay, so, as usual, my weakness gave in. I really wanted to look slim and pretty. And so, I thought, no harm taking a simple deal right? Just put it into installment. And I think I signed something for 12-months or 24-months. Can't remember exactly.
The first few sessions were pretty fine. Every session began with weight measurement and then they measured by body inches as well. Fair enough. It would gauge if the treatments were successful. So it went on for awhile and then I got pregnant. Okay, so I had to stop treatment.
After the baby was born, I engaged a Malay Auntie to do the post-natal message. People told me that it would help to lose the post-natal weight. Well, after about 10 sessions, I stopped her service. And I didn't lose any weight. I tried to resume running but my stamina was really terrible. And some colleagues told me that it was not advisable to run before six months after delivery. So I stopped running as well.
And of course, I remembered Bottomslim. How could I not when I'm paying installments every month? And so I called them up and resumed my treatments.
When I went back to them, I was 60kilos. A terrible weight from my initial weight when I went to them. I think I went to them when I was 49 or 50kg. And so, they came and exclaimed shock and stuff. After realizing that weight gain was due to my delivery, they persuaded me come in twice a week at least. Fair enough because I figured I won't get that much of free time when I start work after my maternity leave.
After a few sessions, they started their sales talk once again - the beginning of my nightmare. They told me, now that my fats were different as of before; because of the pregnancy, I would need a stronger treatment. The previous package that I had bought was no longer suitable for what I would need now. So I would need to "upgrade". Okay, I thought that made sense. So after a little persuasion, I bought the "upgrade" and signed something like a 3-year installment plan of 100plus per month.
The thing about them is that they often get rotation of staff. So after I got nice and comfortable with the lady assigned to me, I turned up one day and found a totally new person tending to me. And when that happens, that person would start introducing me some new packages again. All in all, I think I've "upgraded" a couple of times. And now, I'm on their most expensive equipment. So I'm like the VIP member.
I discovered their tactic was to try and sell to me when I was naked (okay, half-naked). Kind of trap me on the bed. The last time, this China girl tried to sell to me. I had sort of gotten familiar with her and I really didn't want to lose my temper with them. Who knows what kind of treatment they will give the next time I return? After all, I still have so many treatments left! She actually trapped me in the room and I was so pissed off until I literally just dress up before her and walked out of the room. She talked from 6pm to 9pm, can you imagine? And I nearly missed the Eu Yan Sen clinic closing time. I wanted to drop by for a consultation. She called me the next day to apologize.
Usually, after work, I would rush down to the in-laws' place to see Asher. Don't want them to grumble or anything. So if I have to go for treatments, I have to take "time-off". If I arrive there at 6, give an hour for treatment, hopefully I can reach the house by 8 latest. That's way I'm getting more and more irritated by their sales talk.
And twice I went down, just a little over 6, the place was flooded with people and I had to wait for at least 30 thirty minutes. I knew 30 minutes was impossible. My treatments take more than 30 minutes and plus the sales talk? I could end up waiting till 8. So I left without any treatment. There was another customer complaining too. Apparently, it wasn't the first time she encountered this.
And so, I stopped going for awhile too because I picked up Korean lessons and that took one day away from going to see Asher. Meanwhile, I resumed my running; took diet pills; controlled my diet and got sick. And in total lost some kilos along the way.
They called me up last week. Just when I thought they couldn't be bothered with me anymore. Told me I still had a package with them. True. It would be money to waste if I don't finish it. So I decided to drop by yesterday.
Again, they have a new batch of people. Even the sales consultants were different. I planned only to stay till 7 or so. My treatment completed at 6.30pm and I was glad because I wanted to go home early. Then the lady who tended to me started to persuade me to convert my remaining treatments into a maintenance treatment seeing that I didn't have the time to come regularly. With the maintenance package, I need only to come down once a month at most.
The maintenance package which she recommended was of course based on the most expensive equipment which I was currently using. Each treatment was $500. A maintenance package consisted of 10 sessions minimum so that means $5000. Jeez, there was no way I could pay for this anymore. The installments were killing me. So while she was doing me, she kept telling me about the benefits of the treatments. And so I told her firmly, no. Proud of myself. At 6.30pm, she was still talking. Then when I kept saying no, she said okay, I will prepare for your next treatment. I thought fine. When she took a long time to come back, I knew she went to look for the consultant. So I hopped out of bed and decided to dress up. My hubby had already arrived and was asking me for dinner. So I thought I better run. When she returned, she was surprised. I told her I had to go. The treatment would have to wait till next time. And she said, okay, in that case she would put some cream for me. I thought, fine. When she returned, I just laid back on the bed for her to put the cream. And then, the sales consultant came back in.
It was a new girl this time. Someone whom I've never seen before. And so she started talking. She literally lowered the price till $800. Jeez, how could a $5000 package become $800? So that means the original was a fraud? That was crap. While she kept talking, the girl kept applying the cream. I was freezing. I suspected that the cream only took less than 5 minutes actually. And when I said I was freezing, the sales girl just ignored me and went on talking. Oh gosh, come on. Have the consideration to at least cover me with a blanket! The last time I remembered, I actually caught a cold. She talked and talked, until 7.30pm and I got really pissed. Because Asher sleeps at 8. And I was really famished. I wanted to go. So I told her, I don't want to pay for anything. You can talk till 10 and I still won't sign anything. In the end, I had to force myself off the bed, out of the room, and go. Called my hubby and walked out.
Nightmare.
I still have 14 sessions left. I don't know how I'm going to survive the sessions. I realised sometimes I signed because I just wanted them to stop talking.
